by Reid

You are 15 weeks pregnant, and you’re entering one of the most comfortable phases of pregnancy – the second trimester! Your body is continuing to change, and your baby is growing rapidly. Each week brings new developments, from changes in your body to exciting milestones for your little one.

Curious about what to expect this week, including baby growth, body changes, nutrition tips, and precautions? Read on to know more about being 15 weeks pregnant.

Inside Your Womb: 15-Week Baby Development

Fetal development at 15 weeks happens rapidly. Here are the changes you can expect at this stage:

  • Fetal Growth: The fetus grows up to 10.1 cm in length from head to bottom.
  • Belly Size: A 15-week pregnant belly size is roughly the size of an apple.
  • Lanugo: The fetus develops a soft layer of lanugo – fine hair that covers the body. Although the exact purpose of lanugo is not known yet, it is believed that it helps regulate body temperature in the womb. Lanugo sheds before birth.
  • Eyes: At 15 weeks, the eyelashes and eyebrows also begin to form, and the eyes start showing sensitivity to light.
  • Scalp: The baby’s scalp hair pattern also begins to form.
  • Hearing: Around this week, your baby can hear sounds for the first time. They start listening to your voice, so talking or singing to your baby can help strengthen early bonding.

What is Happening in Your Body?

Just like your baby is developing quickly, your body is rapidly changing as well, to adapt itself to the growing fetus. The baby is surrounded by the amniotic sac and getting nourishment from the placenta.

As the uterus expands to make space for the growing fetus, you may get some pain on the sides of your baby bump, known as the ligament pain. You can get some relief from this pain by resting and putting your feet up.

Your breasts will stretch and grow at this time, and you may notice itchy skin on your abdomen. You can get some relief from itchiness by using a pregnancy-safe stretch mark moisturiser or by wearing loose cotton clothing. Consult your doctor in case the itching worsens.

Vaginal Changes and Infections

You may notice some vaginal changes and infections when you are 15 weeks pregnant. Vaginal discharge, also called leucorrhoea – a milky fluid that helps to keep your vagina clean, may increase. However, it is recommended to see a doctor if the discharge changes colour, is smelly or is accompanied by pain.

A vaginal infection at this time is usually Thrush, a common yeast infection. It can cause lumpy white discharge, stinging during urination and sex. It is advised to wear loose cotton underwear to avoid such infections and use non-perfumed soap.

15 Weeks Pregnant Belly Size and Weight Gain

By week 15 of pregnancy, your baby bump may just begin to show. Although it may not show yet for some, as each body grows at its own pace. On average, women gain around 2.2 kgs by this time. This is an approximate figure, and it may vary for some. But if the weight is significantly below or above this, your doctor may review your diet and recommend changes in your next visit. Around this time, you may be able to feel the top of your uterus, just 4 to 5 inches below your belly button.

Tips for Healthy Growth at 15 Weeks of Pregnancy

Here are some tips to keep in mind to ensure a smooth pregnancy journey, especially after 15 weeks of pregnancy:

  • Avoid sleeping on your back: It can cause the uterus to press on major blood vessels (aorta and inferior vena cava), reducing blood supply to your lower body and baby. It may also make breathing harder later in pregnancy. The best position to sleep is on your side.
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach: This position adds extra pressure on the uterus.
  • Use extra support: Place pillows behind your back and between your knees for comfort, or invest in a pregnancy pillow for better support.
  • Soothe Itchy Skin: Use unscented moisturisers and wear loose cotton underwear.

Along with these tips, continue with a healthy diet, moderate physical activity and ample rest to ensure a healthy pregnancy journey.
